HECATE

Everything that is dark belongs to Hecate. She ruled over both the living world and the underworld and is often depicted with keys in hand as the goddess of the boundaries between the two worlds.

She is also accompanied by a black dog, which is rumored to have inspired Cerberus, the three-headed dog at the gates of Hell. As a protective goddess, she was often placed at the entrances of houses to prevent misfortune from entering.

The name Hekate comes from the Greek word "hekatos"

Which means something like “one who works from a distance”. It is characterized by its pair of torches. Hekate often appears in three shaped statues symbolizing the new moon, crescent and full moon in the lunar cycle.

Throughout ancient history, Hecate was worshiped by cults who made sacrifices and built shrines in her name. Two of the most important cults were those in Lagina and Byzantium.

In the Middle Ages, Hekate was also associated with witchcraft and the moon in other regions of Europe.

Hecate is even mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. The Blackburn Cult, a religious group with predominantly female members active in the 1920s, practiced some rituals associated with the worship of Hekate, including tendencies toward the practice of magic.

Hecate played important roles in Greek mythology

Among other things, she led Demeter through the underworld when she was looking for Persephone.

The role she played as a character in stories provided a gateway to the better remembered Greek myths, a testament to Hecate as the goddess of crossroads, spirits and magic.
